Volunteer Position Description
“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve beauty.”
Monarch butterfly populations are declining worldwide. Citizen scientist volunteers are needed to help monitor and track populations for researchers as they work to save this magnificent butterfly. Volunteers in the MLMP provide invaluable information by careful monitoring weekly in butterfly gardens across the Monarch’s breeding range.
requirements
Some knowledge of and ability to identify native flowers
Ability to be be outside, for prolonged periods during the summer season
Training will be provided
duties
Ability to identify native flowers in bloom, with training and the use of wildflower guides
Ability to identify various stages of larva Monarch butterfly on milkweed plants, with training and the use of guides
Accurately record data
Able to effectively communicate with visitors, while monitoring, about the Monarch butterfly and the importance of the monitoring in conservation efforts to save the Monarch butterfly
Represent the Michigan DNR in a positive and professional manner
shifts - Memorial day weekend to labor day weekend
One shift per week or month, approximately 1 - 2 hours per shift
The number of shifts for each volunteer will depend on the number of Monarch monitor volunteers for the season.
